'Soccernomics' calculates a tough tournament for Boys in Green

Over the next few days, sports fans will be heading to France or settling down in front of big screens for weeks of summer soccer heaven. We're all praying that the Republic can do better than four years ago when we suffered a humiliating whitewash.

For the first time ever, this island's two national squads will be at the same tournament, giving all fair-minded people a second team to cheer on.

For real insight into the teams' prospects, you'll have to turn to the sports pages where the experts write. But those of us who dabble in the dismal science might just be able to bring a little something to the party in the shape of "soccernomics".
