Colum Kenny: Website takes mystery out of sentencing

But the fate of offenders will still depend partly on the personality or opinions of a judge, writes Colum Kenny

Joe (not his real name) is Irish. And, at the time of his crime, was a chronic heroin addict.

He and his girlfriend had been invited back to the house of two men in Celbridge.

Once there, he robbed the men and forced one to drive to an ATM to withdraw more cash. He stole about €1,000. The judge said that the victim was "incredibly naive, but this is no excuse", and he sentenced Joe to five years in jail.
