Colum Kenny: Ballot on judicial pay a sad sideshow to the real issues
A minority of judges have brought this month's referendum on their own profession, writes Colum Kenny
We are being asked not only to elect a President this month, but also to vote to cut the pay of judges, and to give Dail committees certain judicial powers over citizens.
Public opinion is strongly in favour of cutting the pay of judges. But I intend to spoil my ballot on this issue, because it is not that simple.
It should never have come to this, and the Government's plans for the legal profession generally need careful scrutiny. Independent courts stand between citizens and the abuse of power by politicians and others.
