Brendan O'Connor: So I'm learning to swim
So I'm learning to swim. Have been for ages, in fact. I would imagine it's been going on for about three years, which means in reality it's probably been going on for five years. One of the rules about the mid-life crisis is that things are now much longer ago than you think they are.
It's a slow process, the swimming. I probably should have done it all in one go, like an intensive course. But I've been taking the scenic route. Sometimes a year could elapse between lessons, though recently has been quite hectic, with two lessons this summer, and potentially another one when Bruno Mars comes to Dublin.
You see. I have this swimming teacher and I feel I'm kind of stuck with her now. She is my swimming mammy. But Marie Wade, as she is perfectly called, lives in Kerry. So we meet for quick assignations in hotels around the country, a snatched, semi-clothed hour when we can. "I'll be in Kerry on the 10th," I'll text her, "Can I see you?"
