Clean water is good news for both fish and fishermen
AFTER all this time, I think I am entitled to a little self-indulgence. And so we come to "Water quality and recreational angling demand in Ireland", published in the 'Journal of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism'.
This is serious research, mind you, by John Curtis and Brian Stanley for the ESRI. They were, after all, trying to find out what anglers want. After the question of what women want, this may well be one of life's great puzzles.
So they have applied the most elaborate available statistical methods to link the behaviour of anglers with the quality of water. Anglers' behaviour is big business. About one in 12 of the adult population regard themselves as recreational anglers, of whom, as you may have guessed, your correspondent is one.
