Brendan Keenan: Scant consolation but figures could have been worse
THERE is very little consolation to be had from the well-worn phrase; "Sure, it could have been worse." It is what people say when they cannot think of anything else.
It is about the only thing that can be said of the latest Exchequer returns on government revenue and spending.
It is not this year that has wrecked the Government's plan for correcting the public finances, but the prospects for next year. So it is only small consolation that 2010 is going much as expected.
