NEITHER government revenues nor government spending last year were exactly as the government intended, but the overall result was pretty much as planned.

That leaves some lingering doubt about the ability of the Department of Finance to forecast tax revenues against economic growth, but it does present a dollop of optimism that the task of restoring stability to the public finances is not impossible.

Most taxes produced more revenue than the department anticipated at the time of the Budget almost 13 months ago. The star was corporation tax on company profits, which brought in almost a quarter more than expected.
