Brendan Keenan: Irish ethos of torpor and detachment
Everything hinges on getting more from less in the public sector, especially our hopes for solvency
IT is hard not to get angry over those stories about government officials returning to work, having retired with tax-free lump sums (which do not come out of their pension 'pots') plus the pensions themselves.
Angry yes, but one should also be concerned. Mind you, it is hard not to laugh as well, even if through gritted teeth; especially at the excuses and defences being offered for the practice. I particularly liked the soothing revelation that the re-hire salary and pension combined cannot exceed the previous, full-time salary.
All fine and dandy, but where is the saving?
