PITY the taxpayer. Not only do we have to pay for all this mess, but now we have to deal with the mysteries of EU accounting as well. It really is too much.

In the end, the decisions of the mathematicians in Eurostat, the EU statistics office, may actually make things clearer. But for now, it is all very difficult.

Let's start with the real money, before we get on to the funny stuff. Last year, the Government put just over €4bn into Anglo Irish Bank, as part of a first re-capitalisation of the banks to prevent them becoming technically insolvent.
