Victory talk from would-be dieters is hard to swallow
Pie in the sky is not a recommended part of a balanced diet. Nevertheless, wishful thinking appears to have become the primary regimen advocated by Operation Transformation, the RTÉ weight-loss show whose latest participants have been bingeing on premature self-congratulation.
All week, the airwaves and newspaper pages have abounded with what amount to victory speeches from the next batch of aspiring dieters, most of whom are inviting public applause before they've shed a single ounce.
A statement of intent to lose weight is as worthless as a public pay cap. Until it's followed up by a decisive change in behaviour, the declaration is just lip service. Behind closed doors, a gluttonous return to the feeding trough remains a distinct possibility.
