Unhealthy green tide swamping our national debate
A left/right consensus centred around deep hostility to the EU has emerged in Ireland, says John-Paul McCarthy
ONE of the most startling results of the EU/ECB/IMF intervention in Ireland has been the way that it has brought seemingly disparate ideological perspectives into a strange new alignment.
This intervention seems to have brought about a sort of left/right consensus in Irish politics that centres around profound hostility to the EU itself.
At the risk of mangling Mao's insight into the French Revolution, it does seem, though, that it is too soon to tell whether these ideological shifts will dissipate by the next election, or whether they herald some new political paradigm.
