TUI dragging heels on deal to redeploy staff

NEARLY a decade later, we still have "surplus" teachers in about 40 schools around the country.

Since the Irish Independent first revealed, in August 2003, that some schools have surplus teachers, the Department of Education has reduced the numbers by 80 -- or just 10 a year -- down from 250 to 170.

In other words, since 2003, around €80m of taxpayers' money has been used to keep teachers in jobs when they would more usefully be deployed elsewhere and the money used to tackle other urgent educational problems.
