ON the surface, Mandy Freeman doesn't seem so badly off. The 41-year-old theatre nurse in a Dublin hospital has a secure public sector job, a pension, a house and a car. She is a single mother but her two daughters are nearly reared. Her youngest has just sat her Leaving Certificate and her eldest is at university.
Look closer and you'll find a mother struggling under a succession of austerity budgets, a signed-up member of what she calls the "working poor", the coping classes".
