THE outcome of last night's marathon talks over the sergeants' "no confidence" controversy was a victory for common sense.

It took more than six hours to reach agreement on the wording, but the carefully drafted statement issued ensured that both sides could be happy with the outcome.

There was a lot of sympathy within the force for the plight of the four sergeants, as they had been sent to the conference in Sligo this week by their local Kilkenny-Carlow branch to stage separate walkouts in front of Justice Minister Alan Shatter and Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan.
