GARDA Commissioner Martin Callinan had no option but to accept the Smithwick finding of collusion involving at least one member of his force with the Provisional IRA in the lead-up to the murder of two senior RUC officers.

Despite any private misgivings that he and his senior officers might share about how the conclusion was reached, he did not dispute the finding and unreservedly apologised for any failings by members of his force.

Allegations that the Provisional IRA had a source within Dundalk garda station, who tipped them off about the arrival of Chief Supt Harry Breen and Supt Bob Buchanan, have been circulating since the ambush in March 1989.
