Tom Boland: Ambitious reform of education will put our students at the centre
TOMORROW, over 57,000 students will sit the Leaving Certificate. Almost two-thirds of them will then go on to higher education and many will go into further education and training. That is in marked contrast to just three decades ago, where only one in five would have gone on to higher education.
There are almost 170,000 students in full-time higher education in Ireland and over 30,000 pursuing part-time courses.
It is projected the numbers will continue to grow, both through increased numbers at Leaving Certificate level as well as among mature learners returning to higher education or entering it for the first time.
