This year, we will have a festive season like no other

We have started to spend again -- because we feel we deserve it, Jose Manuel Barroso, says Jody Corcoran

This Christmas it is not just about the children, but also about us: the adults, Mam and Dad, the parents. Robert Lynd, essayist and staunch nationalist -- he spoke at the funeral of James Connolly -- once said that if he were a philosopher he should write a "philosophy of toys" which would show that nothing else in life need be taken seriously.

Christmas Day in the company of children, he said, was one of the few occasions on which men become entirely alive. I have never really liked Christmas time myself. But this year it will be different.

This Christmas will be like no other -- because it will also be a Christmas for us. As the man said, we must cast out the notion that Christmas exists purely for the young and weak and observe vast attendance.
