The last thing we need is another woman as President
THE last thing we need now is another woman ending up in Aras an Uachtarain as our new president. For too long having a female head of state has been held out as a convenient symbol of how far women have travelled in Ireland.
The argument, though, is all fur coat and no knickers. Behind the female success in the office of the presidency is a political system that largely repels rather than attracts women.
So if a man is elected in the autumn it means this "sop" will no longer be available. Then there will be nowhere to hide when it comes to the bloody depressing state of female representation in Irish politics.
