The immigration issue is here to stay

All citizens need to be educated about our responsibilities as members of the EU, writes John-Paul McCarthy

Senior Irish politicians are probably feeling very sympathetic towards the beleaguered British Prime Minister Gordon Brown after his ultimately disastrous meeting with a pensioner in the north of England.

It cannot be too long before some senior Irish politician is caught in a similar situation, and it is important that the mainstream parties start to craft a suitable register for dealing with the toxic issue of immigration and its myriad discontents.

A moment's reflection shows the scale of Brown's mistake in calling Gillian Duffy a bigot.
