The €1m price of life on our seas
The Coast Guard helicopter in the south-east is being grounded at night to save money. But it is our sailors, fishermen and their families who will suffer
To fishermen and sailors who travel along the south-east coast, it is a cost-cutting measure that will inevitably lead to lives being lost and families bereaved.
In another sign that the threads that hold a civilised society together are being pulled apart in a recession, the Government has confirmed that the Coast Guard helicopter in the region will not be allowed to carry out rescues at night.
The chopper, which keeps watch along hundreds of miles of Irish coastline, is being cut to a daylight service.
