Taxing times as Enda tries to fight off Brussels bullies
ALARM, ALARM, DIVE, DIVE! The klaxons began blaring in some of the more excitable political vessels of state when the news broke that the Sauron-like Eye of the European Commission was about to focus its frightful beam on our tax arrangements with multinational corporations.
Nothing is guaranteed to cause more consternation than the thought of the Brussels bureaucrats tooling up for a scrap over the methods and manner by which the big boys of business are beguiled to set up shop in Ireland.
And most annoying for the Government, the klaxons were threatening to drown out the fanfare of trumpets planned for yesterday morning when the Taoiseach and Tanaiste were to unveil a whole raft of brand new reforms of the Dail.
