Susan McKay: Unionist leadership must face down Orange bullies
THE North's Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness got to the heart of the matter during yesterday's Assembly debate on the ongoing Orange disorders. The question was, he said: "Who leads unionism?" Was it the leaders of the unionist political parties, he demanded, or was it the Reverend Mervyn Gibson? He is right. Unionism has once again capitulated to the degenerate militancy of Orangeism. It isn't the Parades Commission that is behaving illogically.
Just a week ago, the DUP and the UUP joined the leaders of the other main political parties in the North in signing a statement calling on the people to uphold forthcoming rulings by the Commission.
This was commendable and necessary given the trouble there was last summer over defiance of a ruling designed to halt sectarian behaviour during loyal order parades.
