UPON entering public life in 1936, former speaker of the US House of Representatives Tipp O'Neill famously said that "all politics is local".

Preluding to the indisputable importance that local government plays in our society today, the Massachusetts-born statesman later spent much of his political career advocating the crucial role that local government assumes in acting as a mechanism by which social as well as economic ailments can be cured.

Having served as a councillor for the past five years, I've experienced first-hand the vital function that local authority serves in society – in our cities, in our towns, in our communities, but most importantly, in Irish life as a whole.
