Spotlight falls on 'permanent government' with the pursuit of key secretary general

BRIAN Purcell's appearance at the Justice Committee may be viewed as potentially less damaging politically for the Government than previous "resignations" or "early retirements".

What happens to Mr Brian Purcell is a delicate matter and may have much longer-term consequences for the Government than it thinks.

The civil service has come into the firing line more and more under this administration and it is a development that they do not appreciate. There is a growing sense of unease within their ranks that they are being pushed out front to serve as a mudguard for their political masters.
