Sixteen Tons

SIXTEEN Tons was released by Merle Travis in 1946 and tells the story of a coal-miner's life. The line I owe my soul to the company store is often considered a reference to debt bondage -- a system where miners bought goods at the company store with vouchers they were paid in instead of cash
