Shenanigans at CRC buy a bit of time for under-fire ministers

Although the ghastly revelations that emerged from the PAC regarding the eye-popping €740,000 secret pension pot of the CRC's former chief Paul Kiely managed to appall everyone of all political stripes and none in Leinster House, the controversy did provide a bit of a relief for more than one or two individuals.

For just over a week ago, junior minister Jan O'Sullivan was shipping some serious flak over changes to housing grants for the elderly and disabled in a furore that looked set to hang around for some time.

But then along came Irish Water, with chief executive John Tierney using the unfortunate C-word (Consultants) on Sean O'Rourke's show, which landed him in not one, but two Oireachtas Committees, and which landed Phil Hogan back in the spotlight.
