IT'S been a bad couple of weeks for the dwindling number of citizens of this state who still hope and believe that elections matter and that the coming to power of a new government brings more than simply a change in personnel.

Enda Kenny hasn't the rhetorical flourish of Barack Obama. But he echoed the US president in promising real and radical differences in approach, style and policy if elected.

"Change has to start at the top," the Taoiseach said as recently as last summer. "The political system had to respond when the public lost faith in a broken system. As such we are committed to overhauling the way politics and government work."
