THOMAS Byrne touched a raw nerve with his request – revealed in the Irish Independent – for second-preference votes from Sinn Fein supporters in next Thursday's by-election.

Gerry Adams' withering response, branding Mr Byrne's Fianna Fail part of a cosy consensus with Fine Gael and Labour, was hardly surprising.

In reality, a Fianna Fail win in Meath East is the last thing Sinn Fein wants. It would confirm the recent poll findings that the Soldiers of Destiny are back.
