Sam Smyth: Martyr's quest for justice or a desparate final act?

Watching a veteran politician gamble his reputation on the roll of a dice is not the same as Ivor Callely challenging his peers in the High Court.

Yet the embattled senator was in the last-chance saloon yesterday, hoping to have a finding made by his fellow senators set aside by a judge.

But whether this is a brave quest for justice by a martyr or a "chancer's" final act of desperation will eventually become apparent. His own counsel said that the committee's findings had unfairly marked Mr Callely as "a chancer", a "pariah", "a rogue", a "thoroughly despicable character".
