EVERY melodrama needs a villain and Deputy Phil Hogan landed the role ahead of today's vote to decide the Fine Gael leadership. Challenger Richard Bruton's supporters are convinced that Mr Hogan, the party's TD for Carlow-Kilkenny, exerts a Svengali-like hold over Enda Kenny.

And as the momentum moved behind Mr Bruton's campaign yesterday, some of his team were convinced that Mr Kenny would be urged by Mr Hogan to secure an accommodation before the votes are cast.
