JOHN Waters' comments about depression in last week's Sunday Independent soon went viral and sparked a huge online debate.

Singer Sinead O'Connor: "I neither agree with nor respect a lot of views that he expresses, however, I think a person is entitled to express their views in a rational a manner as possible. He is a human being. He is entitled to share his views. As of this morning I do believe there is a bit of a witch-hunt going on now because he said he doesn't believe in depression. Had he said he was depressed the information would have been used by the media and public as something with which to mock and deride him. No one would have had compassion for him."

Performer Panti Bliss: "He doesn't believe in depression but I do, and hope John Waters takes some time out. The (S)indo and Village pieces make me uncomfortable."
