Real reform needed, not just cutbacks in disguise

DURING the boom years, money was pumped into the rural transport scheme to solve the problem of rural isolation.

It was set up with the best of intentions back in 2004 – but with very little detailed planning, with 35 groups in a country with just 26 counties.

There were huge variations in cost, with the average bill for providing a transport service ranging from €70 in the case of one group to €364 for another group – a 1,500pc difference.
