The large pension package granted to the recently retired cabinet secretary Dermot McCarthy presents an unwelcome headache for the Taoiseach as he fights various battles across a broad front.
McCarthy has a combined pension package of around €700,000, an eye-watering sum that plays very badly in these straitened times.
McCarthy will no doubt feel aggrieved at some of the recent coverage, especially the way most reports failed to spell out the enormous range of responsibilities that kept him at his desk for 18-hour days over the last 11 years.
