Playing little wifey to a deadbeat dad costs model mum her dignity
Linda Evangelista would be better off getting on with her life sans Pinault, writes Eilis O'Hanlon
It's probably a sign of the times that most of the hostile comment generated by Linda Evangelista's $46,000-a-month child support claim against her former lover has concentrated on the amount of money for which the one time supermodel is asking. In an age of austerity, when most people lucky enough to have a job don't even earn that much in a year, never mind a month, it does seem obscene to claim that one child should need over half a million a year just to get by.
Actually, though, it's not that much money. It's enough for the astonished judge in Manhattan to state that it "would probably be the largest support order in the history of the Family Court" were it to be granted; but $1,000 a day is small potatoes to people like Evangelista and her French billionaire ex-boyfriend, Francois Henri-Pinault. Linda probably spends that much on her nails without thinking twice about it. Just because it's a small fortune to the rest of us is beside the point.
A person on social welfare in Dublin is a rich decadent Westerner compared to the average citizen of a Third World country, but that doesn't mean they're being unreasonable by cashing the cheques.
