THE near universal welcome for Justice Minister Alan Shatter's proposed DNA database speaks volumes about the major revision of draft DNA laws published by the Fianna Fail/ Green party coalition in 2010.

The mammoth Criminal Justice (Forensic Evidence and DNA Database System) Bill 2013 offers much hope for intelligence-led policing at home and abroad.

It has been welcomed primarily by bodies campaigning for reform of our rape and homicide laws.
