Paul Williams: It's no surprise dirty tactics were used to help 'the cause'

IN THE context of the almost 30 years of the dirty war euphemistically referred to as the Troubles, it was always inevitable that the Provos had spies in the ranks of the security forces.

The Smithwick Tribunal finding that, on the balance of probability, a member of An Garda Siochana colluded with the terrorists who murdered RUC officers Chief Superintendent Harry Breen and Superintendent Bob Buchanan, comes as little surprise.

In particular, it won't be a shock for the many dedicated members of the force who were on the frontline battling against the Republican murder machine in the dark and depressing years of the Troubles.
