Paul Melia: Time to build on success of FG's renovation scheme
The Home Renovation Incentive was one good idea from Fine Gael that appears to have borne fruit.
Introduced in October 2013, it has not only given homeowners help in meeting the costs of upgrading their homes, it has also created jobs. Some 9,500 contractors are involved in the scheme, which has generated work valued at €1.3bn.
The cost to the Exchequer has been fairly modest - tax credits of less than €100m are due, so it's certainly represented a good bang for the taxpayers' buck.
