Not the Nine O'Clock News for Sky's Grainne

SKY News has abandoned plans to put attractive new 'anchor' Grainne Seoige into direct competition with RTE's Nine O'Clock News veteran Anne Doyle when the British channel launches Sky News Ireland in the next three months.

"What happened when Eamon Dunphy went 'head to head' with Pat Kenny was a factor in our thinking," said a source in Sky. "Taking on the Nine O'Clock News on RTE would have been a significant challenge, but it was only an element of the decision."

Instead of one nightly broadcast at 9pm as originally planned, Sky will now have two half-hour Irish news bulletins which will then be put on a "loop" so that they can be accessed by subscribers to Sky Digital at any time. The times of these have not been disclosed but they are unlikely to clash with existing news broadcasts.
