ON A scale of one to 10 of importance – with 10 representing the Nobel Prize and one being the Rear of the Year – the Celebrity Dad of the Year contest probably comes in at around a two. And that's on a good day.

So it's no big deal to hear that Simon Cowell's in the running for this year's title. Previous shortlistees, after all, have included actor James Buckley (nope, me neither); Marvin from JLS (er, which one is he again?); N-Dubz rapper Dappy (anyone?); and even England footballer John Terry.

Si has to be an improvement on that lot. None the less, you have to wonder what organisers were thinking when they included the X Factor supremo in this year's line up. Didn't Cowell famously declare after the birth of little Eric that he "100 per cent absolutely" wouldn't be changing any dirty nappies?
