No substitute for better monitoring

THE cuts in home help, which is seeing around 500,000 fewer hours of care provided in the last three months of the year, has raised deep fears among those who rely on the service.

But how efficiently is the estimated €211m state budget for home-help care being spent?

The service is provided directly by HSE staff or home helps employed by not-for-profit companies, and there is little in place to monitor the latter, many of whom receive multi-million euro budgets.
