Nicholas Leonard: In seven weeks David Cameron has enhanced his reputation

David Cameron's coalition government faces its toughest test so far at Westminster tomorrow when George Osborne, the youngest chancellor for 120 years, sets out the harshest set of tax rises and spending cuts for a generation.

In Cameron's own vivid phrase, this will be the moment when "the rubber really hits the road" as the Treasury applies the brakes to the economy.

He and Osborne have been cranking up the rhetoric to prepare voters for the anguish that lies ahead, warning that the UK is on "the road to ruin" if they do not act and reiterating that they inherited "a truly awful financial situation" from the previous Labour government.
