Miriam Donohoe: I'm just like Miriam ... a slave to the twitterati

PSST. I have a confession to make. I am a #twit. And I am proud. We have become a nation of #twits with more than 22pc of the Irish population aged over 15 signed up to Twitter. That is approximately 500,000 people. And there are over 500 million of us throughout the world, with the number growing by the week.

We have Twitter, Twitter everywhere, and it seems many of us can't live without it, including my namesake in RTE, Miriam O'Callaghan. She insisted yesterday that she will continue to tweet, despite the fact that the national broadcaster is asking staff to agree new guidelines and to take part in social media training in the new year.

Insiders claim that employees have been advised not to tweet while in RTE unless it directly relates to the contents of the programmes they are working on. And there are rumblings among the RTE twitterati that this might be a step too far. Miriam, who has over 50,000 Twitter followers, says she will continue to tweet the way she has always done.
