Miriam Donohoe: A brave politician needs to champion Marie's cause in the name of dignity
This Bank Holiday weekend, while most of us are enjoying ourselves, Tom Curran will be on duty around the clock caring for his terminally ill partner Marie Fleming.
Marie is in the final stages of multiple sclerosis. She is in constant pain, has no use of her arms or her legs, and has no bladder control. Marie has difficulty swallowing liquids and suffers regular choking episodes which leave her exhausted, frightened and distressed.
The 59-year-old is fully dependent and because home care don't do weekends and bank holidays, Tom will not get any break or sleep over the next three days.
