Michael McDowell: Unforced error from Gerry won't bother Northern supporters

But colleagues in South will wonder now that they're trying to get into government

Michael McDowell

There is a general delusion that Gerry Adams was in the IRA at some point in his life.

Grainy footage of him walking beside a coffin wearing his favourite "men in black" outfit and a natty little beret entirely misses the point that this was purely a rebellious young man's fashion statement long before Men In Black came into vogue. Nothing more. Funerals were a place to see and be seen in West Belfast in those days. So studying such old footage and photos in a search for Gerry wearing dark outfits is really as pointless as reading a tattered Where's Wally? book.

Of course this delusion was widespread.
