Michael Denieffe: Indo has lost a talisman and an inspiring leader

The physical presence may have passed, but his spirit will live on. The death of Vincent Doyle yesterday has signalled the passing of a devoted husband and father, an inspirational leader, a fiercely loyal friend, and formidable foe.

The Indo has finally lost a talisman, an iconic figure who guided the fortunes of the Irish Independent through some of Ireland's most turbulent years.

In the sometimes cynical world of journalism, he will remain a legend. His quarter century not out at the helm of the Indo is extraordinary in the perilous world of national newspaper editing.
