Michael Collins: Drama worthy of a gripping opera, but what Vatican needs is overhaul
I LOVE opera – the music, the drama, the costumes and the elaborate scenery. While often the plot is quite ridiculous, the whole experience in enthralling.
The conclave which starts at the Vatican in a few days time would make a great subject for an opera. There is a chorus numbering 115 men, sumptuous costumes against a splendid backdrop. And there is a stupendous finale.
I wonder why no composer has ever attempted the challenge. One drawback is that the chorus consists entirely of tenors and basses. Not a soprano, not even a countertenor is in sight. Women are as unwelcome at conclaves as female cats on Mount Athos.
