IN all the ullagoaning about loss of sovereignty few have stopped to reflect that for a small state in the modern world, with an open economy entirely dependent on exports, undiluted sovereignty in the sense of being fully in control of the decisions affecting finance and economic matters is now a pipe dream.

There is little point in invoking the Edwardian view of sovereignty professed by the 1916 signatories, none of whom had an economic idea worth talking about, except of course James Connolly, and his was wrong.
