RELATIONS within the ESB Group of unions – Siptu, Unite, Teeu, Ucatt and the clerical union, the Esu – are holding up so far but observers predict that this will not last if the dispute "goes nuclear" and the lights are turned out on December 16.

One observer claimed that the background music to this dispute concerns the militant Brendan Ogle and the Unite trade union trying to gain ground within the trade union movement.

The maverick Ogle has been openly critical of the trade union leadership in the past and scornful of social partnership agreements between unions, employers and the Government.
