Mandy Johnston: We got fireworks -- but not the kind we were expecting
WHICH comes first: the city or its culture? To say that the Government's laudable attempt to boost the regeneration project of Limerick City by making it City of Culture 2014 has gotten off to a bad start must already be the understatement of this New Year.
In the coming days, we will get a fuller picture of how and why Limerick was chosen by the Government as our City of Culture for 2014. For now, we must hope that that downward spiral of the initiative can be halted and that some credible management structure will be developed to ensure the success of the project, and to help it deliver the maximum benefits -- culturally and economically -- for the city of Limerick and its people.
Patricia Ryan may very well be the latest and perhaps not last casualty of this house of cards, whose flimsy foundations may be the real cause of the current difficulties. There seems to be no real framework, timetable or a term of reference for the National City of Culture programme set down by the Government, and therein lays the problem.
