Maeve Dineen: Home-grown success continues to prosper despite state neglect

AS 20,000 farmers flocked to Dublin for yesterday's farm income protests, they probably didn't notice several Cabinet ministers rushing into the Shelbourne to join the Kerry Group as the company announced the creation of 1,300 top quality jobs.

The protests neatly embodied old-style farming's zero-sum game approach to agriculture; while Kerry's announcement was a reminder of what happens when people take an enlightened approach to agriculture and food, put their heads down and build a world-class business.

Kerry's management allowed the Government to bask in the reflected glory of yesterday's good news but the reality is that this Government and the previous two governments have ignored Irish success stories, while making eyes at sexy foreign investors.
